Karl Stefanovic gives a two-word response after his infamous stoush with Michael Clarke became the butt of a very risky joke at the Australian Cricket Awards

Karl Stefanovic has given TV viewers a classy two-word response after a joke about his clash with Aussie cricket great Michael Clarke had the crowd in stitches at the Australian Cricket Awards on Wednesday night.

When Steve Smith was interviewed by host Ian Higgins from The Grade Cricketer podcast, he was blind-sided by a jibe aimed at former captain Clarke and the Today show host.

Higgins reminded Smith he is up there with Clarke and Ricky Ponting as greats of the game, before hitting him with the punchline.

‘This year, the winner actually gets a trip to Noosa with Karl Stefanovic, that’s exciting,’ Higgins said, referencing Clarke’s infamous public stoush with the TV star last year.

Smith let out an awkward grin before the camera cut to captain Pat Cummins, who couldn’t help having a laugh.

On Wednesday morning, Stefanovic simply replied ‘great spot’ when his co-host Sarah Abo showed the footage and said, ‘Ooh, sledge! That joke never gets old, does it, guys?’

Journalist Chris O-Keefe – who was being interviewed in the studio at the time – said, ‘It’s like stale bread, that joke. Put it in the bin, move on.’

Abo then said, ‘Where would you take him? There are some nice parks around Noosa.’

Stefanovic lightheartedly shot back, ‘You didn’t have to double down, Sarah.’

Clarke was at the centre of a blazing row with his ex-girlfriend Jade Yarbrough and her brother-in-law Karl Stefanovic in a public park in Noosa back in January 2023.

In the video, which was filmed by an onlooker, Yarbrough accused Clarke of cheating on her with his ex, fashion designer Pip Edwards, on December 17.

He was also accused of messaging the co-founder of activewear label P.E Nation and confessing she was the ‘love of his life’.

All hell broke loose after Clarke, Today show host Karl and his wife Jasmine, the sister of Jade, were having dinner at a beachside restaurant with accountant Anthony Bell.

The video begins with Yarbrough screaming at Clarke before she slaps him in the face and pushes him away after the cricketer insists he didn’t cheated on her.

‘I’m wrong? I’m f**king wrong! You’re a f***ing liar. I can see everything. You called her,’ she screams, apparently referring to messages between Clarke and Edwards.

Clarke then tries to reassure Yarbrough he didn’t sleep with Edwards on December 17, saying he was with Bell that night.

‘Baby you’re wrong, you’re wrong,’ Clarke insists. ‘Baby, baby, Belly was at the house. I swear on my life, I swear on my life… That’s not true, it’s not true.’

He then swore on his daughter Kelsey Lee’s life he did not cheat on her but Yarbrough refused to believe Clarke’s desperate protests and claimed she spoke to Pip.

In November last year Stefanovic confirmed he had not reconciled with Clarke after the incident when he was interviewed by radio stars Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O.

‘Kyle, it’s like a sticker. You rip it off but it’s still there,’ Karl said, revealing peace had not yet been brokered between the pair.

‘There’s still a bit of stick,’ Jackie O said, and Karl confirmed she was correct.

‘Is that like one of those stickers they put on your car when you’re parked in a No Standing spot and you can’t get that bastard off when you try to pick [it] away?’ Kyle asked.

‘Yeah. That is really, really deep,’ Karl agreed.
