Shubman Gill Ruled out of India’s 2nd League Match against Afghanistan

Unwell Shubman Gill will not travel with the Indian men’s cricket team to Delhi for their 2nd league match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. The Rohit Sharma-led team will face Afghanistan in their next match in Delhi on Wednesday (11th October).

The BCCI released a medical update on Shubman Gill’s health on Monday afternoon, confirming that the youngster will also miss the Afghanistan match on Wednesday. After missing the World Cup opening match against Australia in Chennai on Sunday (8th October) due to Dengue fever, India’s youngest opener Shubman Gill will also be unavailable for the team’s next match against Afghanistan on Wednesday.

The world number two ODI batsman will now not be able to play in India’s 2nd match of the World Cup against Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. The right-handed batsman will remain in Chennai and will be under the observation of the BCCI Medical Team.

The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure as the Indian cricket team has nine round-robin matches to play before the Knockout Stage. Meanwhile, the Men in Blue are off to Delhi for their next World Cup match against the Afghanistan team.

The absence of Shubman Gill is a big loss for the Indian cricket team. This right-handed batsman is the only Indian player to score 1,000+ runs in 2023, having scored 1,230 runs in 20 ODI matches with an average of 72.35 which also includes 4 centuries and a double century.

However, the Punjab-born cricketer is likely to make a comeback in the high-voltage game of this World Cup between India and Pakistan on Saturday, October 13 at his favorite ground – Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. His consistent performance is expected to play an important role in India’s quest to lift the World Cup trophy after a gap of 12 years.
